An Explanation.
I am not going to be doing anything more with Quake (or Q2 or Q3A). This isn't a political decision, it's a selfish one.
There are several reasons I've made this decision.
One: I've had pointed out to me just how desensitised I've become to the level of graphic violence in games like Quake, Unreal and Carmageddon (3 games I own and have enjoyed playing). I would not like to think I enjoy playing these games for the violence (Unreal has an involving storyline, Carma's a pretty good little racing game and Quake has programming/editing stuff I've been really interested in). But the violence and the gore isn't pleasant, I don't really like it, and I don't like my wife and kids seeing it. I'm embarassed by it.
Two: I'm bored with Quake. Deathmatch doesn't really interest me. I finished Q2's storyline. Unreal's storyline was better, but the interestng bits of it have dwindled away and it keeps crashing now.
Three: I don't want to be writing Quake tools anymore. I got into it by accident because I wanted to write a particular game using Quake, and needed to write some tools (JQT) to do so. Now I'd rather get on with writing that game using other tools. I know there's still a demand for tools for MacQuake, and I've enjoyed the acclaim for producing the ones I have so far, but it's not a good enough reason to keep on indefinitely. I'm stopping now. Sorry.
On a positive note. I am still committed to developing my programming skills on the Mac. I still want to write the games I want to play. They're just not particularly violent ones, and they're not Quake.
There you go.
